CNN —Lando Norris won the first race of his Formula One career, storming to victory at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday in front of a crowd flooded with celebrities. Sunday’s victory was also McLaren’s first grand prix victory since 2021 – and second in the last 12 years. “He drove perfectly, the car was really fast.”Norris finished 7.61 seconds ahead of second-placed Verstappen to win the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. This year’s attendance at the Miami Grand Prix was a sold out 275,000 across the race weekend, according to Formula One.

Carlos Sainz of Ferrari during second practice ahead of the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix at Las Vegas Strip Circuit in Las Vegas, United States on November 17, 2023. Proponents of the "Netflix effect" often point to a poll taken in 2022 which found 28% of American adults considered themselves to be F1 fans, with more than half crediting "Drive to Survive." If this were true it would mean there were an incredible 72 million F1 fans in the U.S. alone. This argument runs out of road slightly however, when you consider that only 2 million Americans tuned in to watch the 2023 Miami Grand Prix. Today, F1 fans are estimated to be around 40% female, up from just 8% in 2017, as well as significantly more culturally diverse.

CNN —Red Bull has suspended the female employee who accused F1 team principal Christian Horner of inappropriate behavior, according to multiple reports. CNN has been unable to corroborate their authenticity and Red Bull said it would be “inappropriate” to comment on the matter. “The reality is that there was a grievance that was raised, it was dealt with in the most professional manner by the group, not by Red Bull Racing but by the owners of Red Bull GMBH, that appointed an independent KC, that is one of the most reputable KC’s in the land,” Horner said. Leclerc was fastest in all three qualifying phases down the floodlit Strip, with its neon backdrop of landmark hotels and casinos, for his third pole in the last four races. The Monaco driver was still disappointed with his laps, and a pole time of one minute 32.726 seconds only half a tenth faster than Sainz. Red Bull's Sergio Perez, who can clinch second place overall in the championship this weekend, will start 11th as Sainz drops to 12th. Qualifying started at midnight on Friday, making Las Vegas the first grand prix since Japan in 2019 where the pole position was decided on the same day as the race.

Race stewards turned down the Italian team's request for penalty-free repairs because they said they were obliged to apply the regulations as written. "I think it's tough for a team to arrive in Vegas and to have this kind of incident," he said. First practice lasted only eight minutes before Sainz's Ferrari hit the drain cover in a storm of sparks. "You've got to say that's force majeure, that's nothing of their own doing," he told Sky Sports television.

"These cars are generating huge amounts of suction underneath now," said Williams Racing team principal James Vowles. SUZUKA, Japan, Sept 23 (Reuters) - McLaren Formula One boss Zak Brown offered to fly Oscar Piastri's mother to Japan after the Australian rookie driver put his car on the front row of the starting grid for Sunday's race at Suzuka. "I'm very happy to buy her an airline ticket," Brown told Sky Sports television after Nicole Piastri responded to a jubilant McLaren social media post with the words "anyone got a cheap flight to Japan?" From struggling to score points, McLaren are now looking quicker than engine provider Mercedes, even if well behind in the standings. "But of course I want to try and be the next Australian to break some other records or be added to those lists. A nice start, but of course, I want to be able to do more."

SUZUKA, Japan, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Red Bull's runaway Formula One championship leader Max Verstappen roared back from defeat in Singapore to set the fastest lap in the first practice for the Japanese Grand Prix on Friday. Verstappen's best time of one minute 31.647 seconds was 0.626 quicker than Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, the winner in Singapore. McLaren's Lando Norris was third fastest, 0.745 off the pace with a late switch to the soft tyres, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc fourth and 0.927 slower than Verstappen. Perez, 151 points behind Verstappen after 15 of 22 races, was only 11th and 1.396 seconds slower than his team mate. Red Bull are set to retain their constructors' title in Japan on Sunday, needing to score only a point more than Mercedes.

Marko, 80, apologised last week after referring to Perez as a "South American" who was less focused than dominant Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen or the team's now-retired champion Sebastian Vettel. "We can confirm that Helmut Marko has received a written warning and been reminded of his responsibilities as a public figure in motor sport in line with the FIA Code of Ethics," said an FIA spokesman at the Singapore Grand Prix. Perez said on Thursday he had accepted a personal apology from Marko, whose comments continued to provoke a strong reaction in the paddock. It was not the first time Marko had referred to Perez as a South American, although the Mexican comes from Guadalajara which is geographically in North America. "I'm Italian so I know that sometimes we have been facing the same comments," said Alfa Romeo's Alessandro Alunni Bravi.

LONDON, May 18 (Reuters) - McLaren have urged Formula One to change the cost cap rules to help teams promote sustainability without compromising performance. McLaren Racing boss Zak Brown said on Thursday that teams should not have to choose between spending on car performance and sustainability initiatives that were currently included in the cost cap. "We strongly believe in the cost cap and wouldn't want to see anything that undermines its integrity," said the American in a statement as the team published their annual sustainability report. Formula One introduced a cost cap in 2021 to rein in spending and level the playing field between the big teams and smaller outfits. Brown said Formula One needed financial, technical and sporting regulations that enabled teams to innovate and invest in sustainability.
Liberty Media CEO and President Greg Maffei said stakeholders should come together, "strike while the iron is hot" and extend the current agreement that runs through 2025. The deal with Liberty Media, the governing FIA and teams sets out the terms and commercial arrangements under which the teams race. I think Liberty has done a great job with the sport. "The digital age has advanced since we did the last agreement and I think it needs to be discussed. "But I think for the most part it is a solid agreement, it's working so we don't need to fix what is not broken."
Long April break gives F1 time to take stock

LONDON, April 3 (Reuters) - Formula One teams will welcome more than their drivers the breathing space provided by a long April break in a record 23-race season. "I don't want to have that break, because you know which race was missing from that break," said Alfa Romeo's Guanyu Zhou, the sport's only Chinese driver. "You will use it (the break) just to prepare for the next race in a better way and review the first three races. "For the race team, there's an opportunity to have a little bit of rest because the rest of the season will be tough." The break provides more time also for teams to work on upgrades and add spares after a bruising weekend for some in Australia.
McLaren a potential customer for Red Bull, says Horner
  + stars: | 2023-03-03 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
MANAMA, March 3 (Reuters) - McLaren boss Zak Brown visited Red Bull's factory to discuss a potential Formula One power unit supply when the engine rules change in 2026, Red Bull Racing principal Christian Horner said on Friday. They have also been linked to a return to their former suppliers Honda, who have a partnership deal with Red Bull until 2026. Horner told reporters at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix that Brown had been a visitor to Red Bull Powertrains in Milton Keynes. News of Brown's visit raised some eyebrows given apparently strained relations between the American and Horner last year when Red Bull were found to have breached a budget cap. Without naming Red Bull directly, Brown spoke at the time of excessive spending being effectively cheating.
F1 team bosses have their own light-bulb moment
  + stars: | 2023-02-26 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
LONDON, Feb 26 (Reuters) - The late McLaren boss Teddy Mayer liked to compare Formula One drivers to interchangeable light-bulbs, declaring "you plug them in and they do the job", and nowadays the same might be said for team principals. The Frenchman is on his third different team, after stints at Sauber and Renault. "It shows also that the role of the team principal is maybe sometimes also a bit over-rated because if you can change it so quickly and there is no big impact, it tells also something. Sauber, with Swedish billionaire Finn Rausing as chairman of the board, will become the Audi works team from 2026. "But other than that we must not forget that F1 teams have developed into big organisations where the owners are not any more the team principals... some have engineers as team principals, some have more an old-fashioned rule."
"I don't know about money-making machine but we are now a profitable Formula One team," he said. "(We are) very fortunate that we brought in new shareholders that enabled us to do things like the wind tunnel and the simulator. Brown became chief executive of McLaren Racing in 2018 as part of a major restructuring of the second most successful team in the sport in terms of wins. McLaren Racing are part of the McLaren Group, which includes the supercar manufacturer and is majority-owned by Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat. The papaya orange and blue car has been designated the MCL60, a break from previous naming convention, to mark the anniversary of the founding of McLaren Racing by New Zealander Bruce McLaren in 1963.
Larson to attempt Indy 500 and NASCAR 600 double in 2024

Jan 12 (Reuters) - Kyle Larson will attempt the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 double next year after announcing on Thursday he would join Arrow McLaren Racing for a one-off run at the famed Brickyard. Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, will become the first driver to attempt the double since Kurt Busch raced in both events in 2014. Only four drivers have attempted the double of racing in Indy 500 in Indianapolis and flying to Charlotte, North Carolina to jump in a car and run the Coca-Cola 600 later that same day. While Rick Hendrick's stock car teams have won a record 291 Cup Series races, the Indy 500 will mark Hendrick Motorsports first IndyCar series event. McLaren have routinely added notable names to their driver lineup for the Indy 500, including twice Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso.
Why McLaren Racing's CEO banned 'ASAP' from his vocabulary
  + stars: | 2022-12-16 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: 1 min
Failing to do so can lead to miscommunication, says McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown. "I live by briefs and sometimes get multiple briefs," Brown told CNBC's Make It. "If they aren't dated, you end up looking at two documents and you're not sure which one's the current ones." "Never use the term ASAP – that leads to miscommunication. There is no such thing as ASAP," Brown said.
And he will also oversee a wealth management business that is now going to include portions of the consumer business, but wrapped in a wealth management offering. Both, according to Bloomberg's reporting, are being demoted to senior positions within Nachmann's asset and wealth management division. Stephanie CohenAnother executive thought by insiders to have lost some of her territory is Stephanie Cohen, the co-head of the consumer and wealth management division. Had Cohen been able to successfully helm the consumer and wealth management division alongside Tucker York, the currently discussed changes wouldn't have been needed, the people said. Cohen's co-head, York, will now return to his prior role of running the bank's successful private wealth management business.
